Just in time for Christmas 1995 the owners of Heart of the Lakes, Sue and Peter Jackson, hand over a check for £1,500 to help the National Trust carry out vital path maintenance.
Sue and Peter led the way in fundraising through visitor giving by asking anyone who booked a cottage with them to donate £1 to a footpath repair project, and in return they added a further 50p to the pot. Sue hit the nail on the head when she said, 'I realise that this does not sound like a lot of money, but hopefully a large number of small amounts will add up to a substantial figure'. And it certainly has. Since businesses like Heart of the Lakes started fundraising in 1994, well over £2 million has been raised for local conservation projects.
