We're delighted that our project to help holiday cottage owners save energy and lower their bills has been shortlisted for the Cumbria News Award for Environmental and Energy Awareness 2015.
Our 'Low Carbon Cottages' project involved working with Lakeland holiday cottage owners to research energy use in their properties. There are large numbers of holiday cottages in Cumbria - in some Lakeland villages up to 40% of the housing stock can be holiday cottages - and most of them are traditional buildings. There had previously been relatively little research into the effects of retrofitting energy saving measures, in particular insulation, on the fabric of these kinds of homes. We have produced an accessible, online toolkit to help cottage owners identify options for improving the energy efficiency of their properties, including how to communicate with their guests and what to do about heating when a holiday cottage is unoccupied.
