Cycling Eden

Introducing Cycling Eden

What is Cycling Eden?

Cycling Eden is 15 month project that aims to investigate and develop the cycling market opportunities and products that will help develop Penrith and the Eden Valley as a lively and exciting destination for a whole range of cyclists. By promoting cycling as a low-impact activity the Cycling Eden project will add value to the Green Eden Project and support tourism businesses operating in the area.

The first phase of this project, now complete, was a thorough investigation of existing cycling provision in Eden and identification of market gaps and opportunities for product development.

The second phase of the project, also now well under way, aims to progress the opportunities identified by the phase one by developing a range of new and innovative cycle products for Penrith and Eden.

Why cycling, why Eden?

Cycling is a great low-impact activity and fits perfectly with the Nurture Eden project aims of creating a wide-ranging programme of responsible tourism activity in Eden. For the uninitiated, the Eden Valley, with its fantastic network of quiet lanes on gentle rolling hills, makes it perfect leisure cycling territory. On the flipside the Pennine hills are challenging enough to test even the hardiest road or mountain biker. Combined, these features make Eden pretty much the perfect place to cycle and that’s what we want to see. Lots and lots of cyclists in Eden, enjoying the fabulous scenery and unique sense of place.

What will Cycling Eden achieve?

The Cycling Eden project aims to:

  • Develop a mobile application to provide all the Eden cycling information in one place;
  • Develop two new cycling itineraries or routes;
  • Initiate two cycling events;
  • Develop a network of cycle tourism businesses by rolling out an ‘Eden Cyclists Friendly’ scheme.

So lots to do in a short space of time!

What the latest news?

The Eden Valley Epic event was a great success, read more here. Now we're looking forward to the Eden Spoke Festival in August 2013.

In July, we’ll be rolling out our ‘Cyclists-Friendly Promise’ campaign in partnership with Eden District Council. We hope that this will create a network of cycle friendly tourism businesses ensuring cyclists can always find fantastic food, super shops, amazing attractions and a brilliant bed to spend the night in Eden. For further details check out the Cyclist-Friendly Promise section of our website.
