Travel light
As a business it is in your interest that visitors enjoy your local area. You can help them to do this by providing information and encouraging visitors to explore what is available on your own doorstep. This will also help support your village’s economy and reduce your guests’ carbon footprint during their stay.
Problems with transport
Road travel in the Lake District is a problem – our roads were not designed for heavy traffic and our precious landscapes can suffer as a result. Congestion can put off potential return visitors, and your business could therefore lose out. By encouraging visitors to leave their car at home, or at least not use it excessively whilst in the area, you can help mitigate this problem. See how your business can encourage guests to be car free.
Solutions for sustainable travel
- Display public transport information
- Be knowledgeable about local transport networks
- Have local cycle routes, bike hire and walking information available
- Provide bike storage
- Offer a pick up/drop off scheme for local public transport stations
- Promote coach travel and provide facilities
- Staff car share schemes – staff cars to be regularly serviced for efficiency and tyres to be pumped up correctly
- Camping sites, offer seasonal pitches to reduce their travelling
Walkers and Cyclists Welcome
To encourage sustainable transport, you may consider marketing yourself as a walkers and cyclists destination. You could do this by promoting yourself as walker and/or cyclist “friendly” with bike racks and drying rooms available. A library of OS maps and local guidebooks could be on offer for your guests to use. Your business should be aware of what other facilities are available and what these types of visitors would be interested in, such as bike hire or local walking routes.

Electric Bikes
This summer a social business enterprise (Electric Travel CIC) is setting up an Electric Bicycle Network in the central Lakes. There is a great opportunity for a business to become either a hire, or a charge point as part of the Network and benefit from a new revenue stream, new customers, links with other tourism businesses on the network and an exciting, different 'green' tourism offer for your business.
