What's the problem
Visitors to the Lake District drive an estimated staggering 350 million miles per year whilst staying in the region. This equates to 126,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
Carbon emissions have a direct impact on the environment and are the main culprit for causing climate change. Climate change affects all of us and has a negative impact on not only our environment, but also our economy, society and well-being.
Extreme weather, such as the flooding that hit Cumbria in November 2009, could become more regular... unless we act now. Driving fewer miles will help reduce the amount of carbon polluting our atmosphere and help fight climate change.
Traffic Congestion
Large visitor numbers can result in heavy congestion. Many of the roads in the Lake District were not designed to cope with large volumes of traffic, with many being single carriageway or even single track roads. Traffic congestion can be a major source of stress for both local communities and visitors alike. Most importantly, congestion impacts upon our precious environment and wildlife.
